Trojan History cartoon
“Founded in a wooden building, surrounded by a wild mustard field, the University of Southern California has grown steadily to become the largest private co-educational university in the West. In 1880, USC was founded to offer higher educational opportunities to the children of the pioneer generation.

“A group of 53 students and ten professors began classes in the two-story frame building. The students paid $12 tuition, received a liberal education, and attended daily chapel services. In 1884 three graduates received their diplomas.” SCampus 1969-70
